Learning to Love Like Christ: Practical Steps

Loving like Christ is the central call of the Christian life. Jesus demonstrated perfect, selfless love during His time on earth, and He challenges His followers to do the same. But what does it mean to love like Christ, and how can we practically live out this kind of love in our daily lives? Let’s explore what Christlike love looks like and some practical steps we can take to grow in this area.

What Does It Mean to Love Like Christ?

To love like Christ means to love with a self-sacrificing, unconditional love that seeks the good of others above ourselves. Jesus’ love is radical, not based on what people deserve but given freely to all. This love was demonstrated most powerfully on the cross, where He laid down His life for the very people who betrayed and crucified Him.

In John 13:34-35, Jesus commands His disciples, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (MEV). Christlike love is meant to be the defining characteristic of believers, a love that points the world to God.

Practical Steps to Love Like Christ

While loving like Christ may seem like an impossible standard, it is something we can grow in with the help of the Holy Spirit. Here are some practical steps to help us develop Christlike love:

1. Study Christ’s Life and Teachings

The first step in learning to love like Christ is to immerse ourselves in the Gospels, where we see the example of Jesus’ love in action. Study how He treated others—His patience with His disciples, His compassion for the sick and marginalized, His forgiveness of sinners, and His gentleness with children.

Reflect on key passages that highlight His love, such as the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11), or the washing of the disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17). These stories offer powerful insights into how Jesus loved, especially in situations of conflict, judgment, or vulnerability.

2. Pray for a Heart Like Christ’s

Loving like Christ requires a transformation of our hearts, which only God can bring. In prayer, ask God to soften your heart, give you compassion, and help you love others as Jesus does. Psalm 51:10 is a great prayer to offer: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

Additionally, ask God to show you specific areas where you struggle to love others—perhaps it’s with forgiveness, patience, or understanding. Invite the Holy Spirit to work in these areas, giving you the grace to grow.

3. Forgive Without Conditions

One of the most difficult yet essential aspects of Christlike love is forgiveness. Jesus forgave those who betrayed, abandoned, and crucified Him. In Matthew 18:21-22, He teaches that we must forgive “seventy times seven,” illustrating that forgiveness should be limitless.

Forgiving others doesn’t mean ignoring wrongdoing or excusing harmful behavior, but it does mean letting go of bitterness, resentment, and the need for revenge. Start by choosing to forgive, even when your emotions don’t feel like it, trusting that God will help you release the hurt in time.

4. Love Sacrificially

Loving like Christ involves sacrifice. Jesus consistently put others’ needs before His own, even when it was inconvenient, uncomfortable, or costly. Philippians 2:3-4 calls us to this same mindset: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (MEV).

In practical terms, this could mean offering your time to someone in need, giving generously without expecting anything in return, or going the extra mile to serve others. It may involve sacrificing personal comfort or convenience to show love to someone who needs it.

5. Serve Others with Humility

Jesus modeled humility through service. In John 13, He washed His disciples’ feet—an act typically reserved for the lowest servants in society. By doing this, Jesus demonstrated that no act of service is beneath us and that true love expresses itself through humble acts of kindness.

Look for opportunities to serve others, whether in your family, church, or community. It doesn’t have to be grand or noticeable—simple acts of kindness like offering a listening ear, making a meal for someone in need, or helping with practical tasks all demonstrate Christlike love. Serve not for recognition, but out of a genuine desire to show love.

6. Love Your Enemies

One of the most challenging aspects of Christlike love is His command to love our enemies. In Matthew 5:44, Jesus says, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.”

Loving your enemies doesn’t mean approving of their actions, but it does mean choosing to respond with love instead of hatred or revenge. Practically, this can start with praying for those who have wronged you, asking God to bless them and change their hearts. Seek ways to extend kindness to those who oppose you, trusting that God’s love has the power to transform even the hardest hearts.

7. Practice Patience and Kindness

In 1 Corinthians 13:4, Paul describes love as patient and kind. These qualities are foundational to loving like Christ. Patience allows us to bear with others’ weaknesses, mistakes, or difficult personalities without becoming easily angered or frustrated. Kindness, on the other hand, is about treating others with gentleness, respect, and generosity, even when they don’t deserve it.

Start practicing patience by being slow to anger, especially in stressful or irritating situations. Ask God for the grace to respond calmly and with understanding. Practice kindness in your words and actions, whether it’s offering encouragement, giving compliments, or lending a helping hand.

8. Prioritize Reconciliation

Christlike love seeks reconciliation, not division. Jesus came to reconcile humanity to God, and as His followers, we are called to pursue peace and reconciliation in our relationships. In Matthew 5:23-24, Jesus emphasizes the importance of reconciling with others before offering our gifts to God.

If there are broken or strained relationships in your life, take steps toward reconciliation. This may involve initiating a difficult conversation, admitting your own faults, or extending an olive branch even when the other person isn’t ready. Pursue peace, trusting that God can bring healing to even the most damaged relationships.

The Journey to Love Like Christ

Loving like Christ is a lifelong journey, one that requires intentionality, humility, and reliance on God’s grace. While it may seem impossible at times, the Holy Spirit empowers us to grow in love and to reflect the heart of Jesus more and more each day.
